The ProKat system provides a compilation of information about the respective vehicle in three ways:
The most comprehensive information is obtainable via the vehicle identification number (VIN). This means that an enquiry is made with the vehicle manufacturer about the type, the equipment, colours, etc.
The second point of entry are the key codes (manufacturer and type key code: HSN/TSN) of the German Federal Office for Motor Vehicles, via which the official acquisition criteria, i.e. information about the engine, dimensions, weight etc. can be found out.
Both types of identification can be taken from the vehicle registration document; for this, we also offer a reading-in of this data as an option.
Yet even without these numbers, we offer a base of information about a vehicle make incl. for example, times of manufacture or possible equipment of the respective series or interior designs.
The engine constitutes a main feature of the vehicle in general and especially in the context of parts identification due to the high number of wear and tear parts in the surrounding area.
Via the VIN enquiry, a certain engine – such as “2,0 L - 110 kW/150 PS TDI DPF KAT (CKFC)“ – can be determined, mostly incl. the manufacturer’s code for the unique identification of the engine type (engine code, e.g. “CKFC” within the VW Group).
The engine is also a key criterion for the German Federal Office for Motor Vehicles. By way of the key codes, besides the performance in HP and kW, the cubic capacity in cc, the type of fuel (both shares with hybrid vehicles) and the number and order of cylinders (to the extent available) can be determined.
Besides the engine, the transmission type, i.e. “6-gear” of when it comes to automatic transmission e.g. “6-gear double clutch transmission DCT”, the mode of drive, i.e. front-wheel or rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive as well as the type of car body, i.e. the number of doors or whether it is a convertible can be determined via the VIN enquiry. These details also include the manufacturer code.
In the field of commercial vehicles, there are also further criteria such as wheel base, model or type of drivers cab.
The field of equipment includes classical equipment that would also be found in a consumer vehicle configuration such as AC system, navigation system or assistance systems such as lane departure warning systems as well as rather technical details such as the diameter of the brake discs.
Even in this case, the unique manufacturer codes are frequently part of the data.
When using the VIN enquiry, the equipment that are actually in the vehicle are provided, but even without an enquiry, statements can be made.
The ProKat Vehicle Database divides the models into so-called subtypes. Depending on the manufacturer these subtypes represent an equipment package (with Skoda e.g. into “Ambiente” or “Elegance”) or even the engine again. If the subtype is known, the standard and special equipment can be determined.
On the models level, a fundamental statement can be made about the possible equipment. The question can thus be answered as to whether an uphill driveaway control system is in the programme.
Colors and materials
Via the VIN enquiry, the paintwork colour (or colours e.g. with a different roof colour as with a Mini), colour or type of interior as well as material and colour of the upholstery can be determined.
Via the manufacturer code also provided in this case, when it comes to the paint, car repair paint and pens can be identified and offered.
Time of manufacture
On the model as well as the subtype, there are manufacturing intervals such as “from 03/2013” or “03/13 to 08/2015”. When using the VIN enquiry, a specific time of manufacture is determined as a date.
As already stated, you are given the unique manufacturer codes in many cases with the variant properties (such as engine or transmission), equipment, colours and materials,
whereby this information is technically analysable and a transfer to other systems is guaranteed.
The key codes of the Federal Office for Motor Vehicles for manufacturers (manufacturer key code) and type (type key code) serve in ProKat both the limitation of the vehicle selection for the subsequent parts identification and as the basis for determining vehicle details (see below) and registration data.
When using the VIN enquiry, the two key codes are predominantly known and do not need to be recorded in addition.
On the basis of the manufacturer and parts key codes the following information can be gained on the following subjects:
- Identification (commercial and official)
- Vehicle category (e.g. M1 for cars) and build type (e.g. station wagon)
- Number of seats and standing places where applicable
- Number of axes and driven axes
- Maximum speed
- Official approval
- Engine data such as performance, fuel type or number of cylinders
- Dimensions and weights
- Axis and tow bar loads
- Standing and driving noise (dB)
- Test values as per Eurocode (e.g. Euro 5 or 6) on fuel consumption and polluting emissions such as carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxide and particles
